The purpose of this study was to find the feeding preferences Odontotermes obesus termites on different types commercial timbers along with evaluation and their resistance non- behavior under lab field conditions at 100ºC. There were six wood species which evaluated regarding attack damage include Azadirachta indica (Neem), Eucalyptus globulus (Safaida), Ficus religiosa (Peeple), Mangifera (Aamb), Dalbergia sisso (Taali or Sheesham), Acacia arabia (Keekar). Qualitative and Quantitative Determination of Resistance of Twenty Two Malaysian Commercial Timbers through Subterranean Termite Feeding Behavior

As defined in BS EN 350-1 [1], natural durability is ‘the inherent resistance of wood to attack by wood destroying organisms’. Eaton and Hale [2] defined natural durability or decay resistance as the ability of the Heartwood of any wood species to resist decay. Normally, natural durability is measured by exposing the wood to biological agents such as termites, beetles, fungi and marine borers (...

Nutritional ecology of the formosan subterranean termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae): feeding response to commercial wood species.

The feeding preferences of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, were tested in three separate experiments on 28 different wood species. Experiment 1 was a multiple-choice test designed to test relative preferences among 24 wood species commercially available in New Orleans, LA. Experiment 2 was a similar study designed to test relative preferences among 21 wood spe...

Subterranean termite invaSion originS

Subterranean termites in the genus Coptotermes Holmgren are structural pests that have become globally distributed beyond their native range in Southeast Asia. Because of their destructive nature, it is useful to understand the pathways of their spread. Additionally, phylogenetic analysis of evolutionary relationships may lead to increased accuracy of insecticide-based management on the basis t...

Immunomarking reveals food flow and feeding relationships in the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar).

Trophallaxis and feeding relationships in the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), were examined using a novel marking technique, rabbit IgG protein coupled with an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the marker. Transfer experiments in small dishes evaluated the trophallactic transfer of the marker from donor workers fed IgG-treated paper to recipient...

Myosin Gene Expression and Protein Abundance in Different Castes of the Formosan Subterranean Termite (Coptotermes formosanus)

The Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus) is an important worldwide pest, each year causing millions of dollars in structural damage and control costs. Termite colonies are composed of several phenotypically distinct castes. Termites utilize these multiple castes to efficiently perform unique roles within the colony. During the molting/caste differentiation process, multiple ge...
